Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Becomes Africa’s First Abbott World Marathon Majors Race
Sunday, 23 May, 2027
Package dates: 21– 24 May 2027
Cape Town Marathon – A Historic New Chapter in Global Running
The Cape Town Marathon has become one of the most talked-about races in the world running community. In 2025, the event faced an unprecedented challenge when severe winds forced organisers to cancel the race on the morning of the event for safety reasons. While disappointing for thousands of runners who had travelled from around the world, the decision demonstrated the organisers’ commitment to participant safety above all else.
The setback only strengthened the event’s determination. In May 2026, Cape Town successfully delivered its marathon under the scrutiny of international evaluators, completing the final stage of its assessment process. As a result, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was officially confirmed as Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major, joining the elite ranks of Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York. The race will formally enter the World Marathon Majors series from 2027, marking a landmark moment not only for South Africa but for the entire African continent.
